Andrew Berks (b. 1992, England) is a painter whose work explores the expressive potential of oil paint through a controlled blend of precision and force. Raised between the UK and Canada, Berks developed his distinctive visual language early and has worked as a full-time artist since 2012. He currently lives and works in the rural landscape of Herefordshire, England—a setting that continues to influence his evolving subject matter and approach.

At the heart of Berks’ practice is a deep engagement with the technical and material qualities of oil painting. Working predominantly with palette knives, he embraces both the brutal honesty and the subtle control they afford. His process typically begins with transparent glazes and resolves in assertive, highly refined marks—inviting the viewer to engage both with the physicality of the medium and the impact of the image.

Berks is best known for his commanding portraits of cattle—chosen for their quiet monumentality and the way their forms yield to painterly interpretation. These works balance clarity and abstraction, control and spontaneity. In recent years, his practice has expanded to include more landscapes, floral studies and portraits, creating a nuanced dialogue between structured forms and looser, more intuitive observations.

Berks’ work is held in private collections across Canada, France, Mexico, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States.
